Ingrid Bergman allegedly had a dark side in her life where she got pregnant by Roberto Rossellini’s first child while still married to her husband. Yep, the same woman who once played a nun.
In 1948, Ingrid Bergman, then-32, had created an innocent reputation for herself. The Swedish actress was the same one who played a nun in “The Bells of St. Mary” and also starred as a saint in “Joan of Arc.”
However, it wasn’t long before the world got to know the private side of her life. She left her husband and had a child out of wedlock with Italian director Roberto Rossellini.

BANNED FROM HOLLYWOOD
Bergman ended up being banned in Hollywood and denounced on the US Senate floor. The star was not able to visit the US until 1957 when morality started changing, and her career recovered.
How she was treated by Hollywood and the US as a whole brings to mind how Jada Pinkett Smith was treated when she appeared to have stepped out in her marriage to Will Smith.
JADA’S ENTANGLEMENT
In July 2020, Pinkett Smith confirmed on her Facebook talk show that while she and her husband briefly separated in 2016, she had an “entanglement” with a rapper named August Alsina.
Luckily for her, times had changed in 2020, and she didn’t lose her job or have to fight to keep her image. Fortunately, by the time Bergman passed away in 1982, she was back to being a beloved figure in the industry.
INGRID’S MARRIAGE & CAPA AFFAIR
In the biography, “As Time Goes,” Laurence Learner spoke to Bergman’s first husband, Dr. Petter Lindström. Learner described the actress as an often selfish woman who started drinking a lot in her late 20s.
While she was married to Lindström, she allegedly had an affair with photographer Robert Capa, whom not much is known about. However, she also occasionally saw other men, while her husband hoped she would repent.
ROSSELLINI & SHATTERED IMAGE
Regarding Rossellini, the pair reportedly became involved while working together to make 1950’s “Stromboli.” While Bergman was married, Rossellini also had a wife.
The alleged affair shattered the actress’s saintly image, and when the movie “Stromboli” came out, it was met with great opposition. Despite this, Bergman’s following movies were also with Rossellini, and they were all flops.
WHY SHE FELL IN LOVE WITH ROBERTO
The actress fell for the director because she found romance, adventure, creative genius, and more with him. However, one aspect that they shared was that they were both self-absorbed.
He was quite impulsive and was incapable of a relationship in which he was less than the center. Bergman got pregnant with Rossellini’s child, and when she asked her husband for a divorce, he initially refused.
THEIR SON, MARRIAGE, AND DIVORCE
She ended up giving birth to her son, Roberto, days before her divorce was finalized. Ultimately, Bergman became pregnant with Rossellini’s child while still married to Lindström, with whom she shared Pia Lindström.
The actress and the director ended up getting married, having two more children, twin daughters Isabella and Isotta, before divorcing in 1956. Another one of Bergman’s alleged lovers was Gregory Peck.
The Catholic man allegedly had an affair with Bergman while filming 1945’s “Spellbound.” He was actually married twice, firstly to Greta Kukkonen and then Veronique Passani.
Peck and Kukkonen divorced in 1955, and he married the then-21-year-old French journalist who had interviewed him two years earlier in Paris. He managed to stay devoted for the rest of his life and died at 87 in 2003.
INGRID’S RISE, 3RD MARRIAGE, & DEATH
When Bergman managed to pick up a second Academy Award for her supporting role in “Murder on the Orient Express” in 1974, it was around this time that she was diagnosed with breast cancer.
In 1982, she performed for the last time in the TV movie “Golda,” which earned her an Emmy. Her death came on her birthday, August 29, at age 67 in London, and by then, she had divorced her third husband, Lars Schmidt.
CHILDREN PAY TRIBUTE
Two of her daughters, Pia and Isabella, followed in her footsteps by becoming actresses. In a February 2020 “Closer Weekly” article, the late star’s daughter’s paid tribute to her.
Even though she once had a bad representation in the US and the film industry, her daughters remembered her as someone who was “wonderful” and a “warm and open” mother.
